TWiB #37 – Pear Cheesecake

I’ve moving more and more towards inventing my recipes instead of following them word-for-word from a book.  Here’s a flavor combination that I came up with myself.  The pears are a subtle flavor addition to this creamy cheesecake.

Changed all the brown sugar to white sugar.  Used 2 pears instead of apples.  Used ground vanilla wafer cookies instead of graham cracker crumbs.  Omitted cinnamon and apple cider.

Still not the best cheesecake ever.  3.5 stars out of 5.

TWiB #9 – Pumpkin Cream Cheese Pie

I made this pumpkin cream cheese pie as part of a pi(e) date with GiR. We had cottage pie, this pie, and watched the movie Pi.

3 stars out 5. Not really any better than a traditional pumpkin pie.

Food, glorious food!

For the 4th of July, I decided to make a red, white and blue themed cheesecake. The crust is just 1/2 a red velvet cake mix (prepared as directed on the box) baked in a 9″ springform pan. I used a simple generic recipe for the cheesecake part. The blueberry sauce came from my trusty friend Betty ;). All in all, a simple dessert, but it was pretty well received. The red velvet cake was “meh”, in my opinion, but the blueberry sauce was fantastic.

I had originally bought some strawberries for potential use in the 4th of July cheesecake, but as you can see, I didn’t end up using them. I also had some leftover Bavarian cream from a small cake I made for my mom. I needed a dessert for a game night at our house, so I bought some dessert shells from the store and decided to “whip something up.” I simply filled the shells with the cream, sliced a strawberry all fancy-like, and placed it on top. Simple, big hit, slightly messy to eat. =D

I’ve also whipped up some tasty dinners this past week, but no pictures. It’s pretty fun putting together disparate ingredients into a tasty whole. I’m typically a strict recipe-following gal, but throwing stuff together is satisfying as well.

Tie-Dye Cheesecake

A few weeks ago, I was sent a recipe for a tie-dye cheesecake. I was getting together with some friends for a tie-dye party, so I thought that would be the perfect time to try out the recipe. I couldn’t find any red velvet cake mixes, so I just used a vanilla wafer crust of my own recipe.

It turned out really creamy and tasty, but some felt that the almond flavor was a bit out of place. Overall, got great reviews and I’m sure I’ll try the recipe again (sans tie-dye).
