TWiB #4 – Sachertorte

29 January 2008 · Leave a Comment

When thinking of fancy desserts, sachertorte is definitely something that comes to mind. And it’s surprisingly simple: chocolate cake with apricot filling and a chocolate glaze on top.

Plus, the results are fantastic.

Not sure, as I forgot to ask people and I didn’t eat it myself. Tentative guesses put it at 3.5 stars out of 5.

TWiB #3 – Cappuccino Biscotti

18 January 2008 · Leave a Comment

In the quest for something that I’ve never baked before, we came across biscotti. I’m not a fan of it personally, but I thought I’d give it a try. Sadly, we were all underwhelmed. Way too dry (of course) and just no interesting flavor. Hazelnuts and chocolate are usually a good combination, but they just didn’t do enough for the generic biscotti. Maybe someone who actually likes biscotti would find this recipe appetizing.

This Week in Baking Week #1 – Apple Coffee Cake

4 January 2008 · Leave a Comment

For a semi New Year’s resolution, I’m going to make a new baked good every week. I’ve got so many recipes that I want to try out, so this is my chance. Each week I’m going to pick a new recipe, whether it be a cake, cookies, pie, or other dessert and try it out. I will feed it to friends and family, get their feedback, and hopefully improve my baking skills and techniques. It’ll be a great learning experience and we get to eat tasty food!

For week #1, I chose to make this apple coffee cake (sans sauce).

The ingredients are easy to pick up, the steps are easy to follow. It makes the kitchen smell wonderful! My testers (GiR and MB) gave it 3 stars out of 5. MB recommended perhaps adding more spices, such as nutmeg. GiR brought the leftovers into work the next day, and I’ve already got an order to make one! Sounds like a success to me.
